DEAR Summer Program Recap

SHARE's DEAR Summer Program ended on July 26th, after six weeks of learning about the Circus, 4th of July, Hawaii, and Mexico.
  • In studying the Circus, the clients learned how and where the Circus started. They painted faces and dressed up as clowns.
  • On the 4th of July, they learned that this holiday is celebrated because it is the anniversary of the United States gaining their independence from Great Britain in 1776. The students paraded with their flags through the building and outside in the park. They enjoyed a water gun fight and hot dogs and watermelon.
  • In their study of Hawaii, they learned the Hawaiian Islands are of volcanic origin. There are eight major islands.  On August 21, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. Tourism is the major industry. They learned that the black beaches in Hawaii are formed by years of the ocean pounding against the lava creating black sands that wash up on the beach mixed with seashells. They talked about the Kilauea Volcano that has been erupting recently and the damage has been great with many homes being destroyed. They made a duplicate of a volcano that showed it erupting out the top. The clients learned how to make a lei and had a Hawaiian Luan, featuring grass skirts, Hawaiian food and leis.
  • The students also learned about Mexico. From the time of Hernando Cortez's conquest until 1821, Mexico was a colony of Spain. In the early 1800s Mexico fought for and gained its independence. Some interesting facts about Mexico:  The official name of Mexico is United Mexican States, the capitol is Mexico City, the national symbol is the golden eagle, the main language is Spanish

This Month's Featured Program: Speech Therapy

SHARE’s speech therapists hold licensure by the State of Georgia and are certified by the Professional Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. SHARE is a certified Medicaid, Medicare, Amerigroup, Peach State, and multiple insurance company providers.

The main goal of speech therapy is to improve skills that will allow a person to communicate more effectively. Some other goals might include:
  • Improvement in the ability to understand and express thoughts, ideas and feelings
  • Improved swallowing function
  • Improvement of speech muscles through strengthening and coordination exercises, sound repetition and imitation.
  • Improvement of communication between the brain and the body through visual and auditory aids such as mirrors and tape recorders.
  • Improving the learning of language through language stimulation and the use of language through positive reinforcement
Each person will have a different outcome of speech therapy depending on his or her particular abilities. The length of time in speech therapy depends on many factors such as severity of the problem, the frequency and consistency of therapy and the consistency of help at home.
